Confucius, The Analects
The Master said, "At fifteen, I had my mind bent on learning. "At thirty, I stood firm. "At forty,
I had no doubts. "At fifty, I knew the decrees of Heaven. "At sixty, my ear was an obedient organ for
the reception of the truth. "At seventy, I could follow what my heart desired, without transgressing what was right."

Confucius, The Analects
Chapter III. The Master said, 'If a man be without the virtues proper to humanity, what has he to do with the rites of propriety?
If a man be without the virtues proper to humanity, what has he to do with music?' Chapter IV. 1. Lin Fang asked
what was the first thing to be attended to in ceremonies. 2. The Master said, 'A great question indeed. 3. 'In festive
ceremonies, it is better to be sparing than extravagant. In the ceremonies of mourning, it is better that there be deep
sorrow than a minute attention to observances.'
The Bible, I Corinthians 13
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling
cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though
I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
'The Golden Rule' in Confucius and in the Bible
Confucius, The Analects
Book XV, Chap. XXIII. Tsze-hung asked, saying, "Is there one word which may serve as a rule of practice for all
one's life?" The Master said, "Is not RECIPROCITY such a word? What you do not want done to yourself, do not do
to others."
The Bible
Luke 6.31 And as you would that men should do to you, do you also to them likewise. Matthew 7.12 Therefore
all things whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
Man in the Image of God
Confucius
Doctrine of the Mean, Book XI, Chap XXII.
It is only he who is possessed of the most complete sincerity
that can exist under heaven, who can give its full development to his nature. Able to give its full development to his own
nature, he can do the same to the nature of other men. Able to give its full development to the nature of other men, he can
give their full development to the natures of animals and things. Able to give their full development to the natures of creatures
and things, he can assist the transforming and nourishing powers of Heaven and Earth. Able to assist the transforming and
nourishing powers of Heaven and Earth, he may with heaven and Earth form a ternion.
The Bible
John Chapter 1, Verses 1-18
1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God.
2. The same was in the beginning with God.
3. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made
that was made.
4. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended
it not.
6. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all
men through him might believe.
8. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9. That was the true Light, wich lighteth every man that cometh into
the world.
10. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world
knew him not.
11. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the
sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13. Which were born, not of blod, nor of the will of the flesh, nor
of the will of man, but of God.
14. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld
his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
15. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom
I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me; for he was before me.
16. And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace.
17. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus
Christ.
18. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, whcih is
in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
